For the children in high-security Immigration Detention Centres in Nauru and mainland Australia, what does time mean? How much time have they already lost to war and persecution? When non-citizen children arrive in Australia without a visa, they are detained while their application for refugee status is processed. An amendment to the Migration Act in 1994 that enforces mandatory detention for an indefinite period of time is older than the children seeking protection. The Australian Government is frozen in time on this issue, while children are running out of time. When they are finally processed, will they have an opportunity to rebuild their life, or will their time be up?
